Born in Zwickau in the German Kingdom of Saxony, Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was originally studying law when he decided to become a virtuoso pianist instead. An injury ended this pursuit, however, and he then turned to composing, ultimately becoming one of the most accomplished composers of the period.
