The Marian apparition near the town of Lourdes in southern France was first seen by a 14-year-old girl, and reappeared to her, along with a growing contingent of followers, 17 additional times during 1858—many of which were in late February and early March of that year. On account of this reoccurring miracle, numerous churches were eventually built at Lourdes, with the girl who first encountered the apparition, Bernadette Soubirous, being elevated to sainthood in 1933 by Pope Pius XI.
