    100205 | OTTOMAN EMPIRE. Mehmed V Reşâd zinc Medal. Dated 1916. World War I series: The friendship of the sultan (60mm, 93.17 g, 12h). By B. H. Mayer in Pforzheim.

     

    SULTAN MOHAMMED V, bust facing slightly left, wearing fez / ZUR / ERINNERUNG / AN DEN / WELTKRIEG / 1914/16 in five lines; all within wreath, with sword and torch crossed in saltire. Edge: Plain.

     

    Zetzmann –; Pere –; cf. Gorny & Mosch 172, lot 6709 (which realized a hammer of €850 [$1,154]). About Uncirculated. Pleasing yellow-brown surfaces, with a good deal of underlying luster remaining; some scattered marks and spots on the obverse; a moderate degree of pitting consistent with medals struck in zinc is present on the reverse. Extremely rare, with the Gorny & Mosch example being the only other specimen located by this cataloger.
