Hailing from an exceptionally gifted musical family, Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) was the son of Johann I, a Romantic composer famous for his waltzes, the brother of Josef and Eduard, and the uncle of Johann III. Johann II's dance music and operettas number over 500, garnering him the nickname of "The Waltz King," and include works such as An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube), Kaiser-Walzer (the Emperor Waltz), Die Fledermaus (The Bat), and Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron).
