Born to an Ashkenazi Jewish family in eastern Bohemia, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) was one of the leading and defining conductors of his era, bridging the gap between the Austro-German tradition and modernism. Toward the end of his career, he was briefly director of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.
