Van Hoydonck 16. Mint State. Charming mahogany surfaces, with some underlying radiance. Rare.

 

Built in the Gothic style in the early 13th century, the Basilica of Our Lady at Tongeren underwent further modifications (still present today) to her belltower between the 15th and 16th centuries. The interior view conveyed on the reverse of this medal is where, since 1475, the image of Our Lady of Tongeren resides.

 

Compare to an inferior example (mottled surfaces with some rim bruises) in Coin Galleries (Stack's) August 2009 (lot 6010), which realized a hammer of $240.
