Born in 1776 in the Kingdom of Prussia, E. T. A. Hoffmann became one of the major authors of the Romantic movement, penning numerous stories which would heavily influence 19th century literature. One of his works, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, is well known for its holiday appearances as a ballet by a shortened name, The Nutcracker. The later was based upon Hoffmann's novella by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and is consistent with Hoffmann's roots in fantasy and Gothic horror.
