NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, uniformed bust right / SURRENDERED TO H. B. M. S. BELLEROPHON CAPT MAITLAND, the British man-of-war HMS Bellerophon under sail left upon the seas, possessing a satirically large eagle on the staff of the deck; another ship in background. Edge: Plain.

Bramsen 1691; Julius 3431; cf. d'Essling 1627 (silver); BHM 884; Eimer 1078; Mudie 37. Choice Mint State. Pleasing reddish-brown surfaces, with a delightful cameo appeal; a few lightly scattered spots.

Following Waterloo, Napoleon had plans to sail to America with his elder brother Joseph, but was blocked in the English Channel by the British ship Bellerophon. After initially trying to wait them out, he ultimately surrounded after a few days and was taken prisoner aboard the ship.
