Zetzmann 4008; Hans Kaiser Coll. 409. Mint State. Exceedingly lustrous and prooflike, though numerous light marks and hairlines in the fields are noted. Rare.

 

Given the command of a provisional army, Otto von Emmich holds the distinction of having commanded the first battle to take place during World War I. On the morning of 5 August 1914, he began a bombardment of the eastern Belgian forts in an attempt—which would prove to be successful—to take the city of Liège and secure invasion roads into Belgium for the German army.
