With its initial stone being set in 1221, the cathedral at Burgos was constructed in the French Gothic tradition, being completed in the 15th century, though additional modifications and alterations would continue for a few more centuries. Within, there are numerous artistic and historical treasures, such as the tomb of El Cid and his wife, Doña Jimena, a Renaissance golden staircase designed by Diego de Siloé, and the Papamoscas—a bell-ringing and mouth-opening automaton, operating once each hour at the top of the hour.
