Born in Italy in 1892, Oronzio Maldarelli immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1901, where he would later begin his studies in the world of art. Famous for his many classical nude sculptures, his work became a bit more abstract and modern toward the latter part of his career, exemplified by this issue in the Society of Medalists series. In his "Message from the Artist," pamphlet, Maldarelli wrote about his design that "...as its function is not to memorialize a specific subject, I hope it will be interpreted and accepted as a piece of sculpture and perhaps enjoyed as such."
