100693 | SWEDEN. Ivar Broman bronze Medal. Issued 1962. Commemorating the life of the embryologist and comparative anatomist (45mm, 40.64 g, 12h). By L. Holmgren.

IVAR BROMAN NAT MDCCCLXVIII OB MCMXLVI / SOCIO MERITISS R ACAD - SCIENT SUECICA MCMLXII, facing bust / ARDEBAT CUPIENS VITAE COGNOSCERE PORTAS, two parallel fetuses within wombs. Edge: MJV SILVER 1962.

Choice Mint State. Pleasing brown surfaces, with some lighter highlights. A rather interesting subject for medallic art, and featuring an erroneous edge inscription referring to silver rather than bronze as the metal.

Ivar Broman grew up in southern Sweden and studied both there at Uppsala University and in Germany, eventually becoming numerous works on embryology and comparative anatomy. Though not a member of the Nazi party, he did express interest in many of the scientific studies which were carried out under the German Nazi régime—in particular, their work in eugenics.
