CARL WEGELIUS, semi-janiform head of Wegelius facing slightly right and fully right, the latter in slightly less detail / Nude female seated facing, lower body facing right, with rectangular portion of midsection appearing as an x-ray; stylized rays around. Edge: KULTATEOLUSUUS.
Hackl & Klose 94. As Issued. Warm yellow-brown surfaces, with some very light rub on the high points. From a mintage of just 306 pieces, some of which have been used as awards for the Carl Regelius Prize, the highest award of the Radiological Society of Finland.
A doctor and professor, Carl Wegelius received his doctorate in 1934 and thereafter taught and practiced medicine in his native Finland. In 1948, he moved to Sweden, continuing on in his dual role. One of his important contributions was developing x-ray methods to capture a newborn's first breath. In his honor, the Carl Regelius Prize was created for those making advancements in the field of radiology in Scandinavia.
