    100961 | GERMANY. General Hermann Karl Bruno von François cast iron Medal. Issued 1916. World War I series: The battles of the Eastern Front (109mm, 12h). By F. Eue & R. Ball in Berlin.

     

    GENERAL v. FRANÇOIS, uniformed and capped bust facing slightly right / Soldiers advancing left toward the front lines; in six lines below, GUMBINNEN / TANNENBERG / MASURISCHE SEEN / GORLICE / RADYMNO / 1914–1916. Edge: Some light marks as made, otherwise plain.

     

    Cf. Zetzmann 4119 (smaller module; silver). Choice Mint State. Attractive blackened surfaces, with great relief. Extremely large and rare format.

     

    Born in Luxembourg to a noble Huguenot family, von François played a vital role in many of the early battles on the Eastern Front, including Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes.
