    100962 | GERMANY. Vizeadmiral Maximilian Johannes Maria Hubert Reichsgraf von Spee cast iron Medal. Issued 1914. World War I series: the naval battle at Santa Maria (108mm, 12h). By M. Ziegler & H. Grünthal in Berlin.


    VIZEADMIRAL GRAF VON SPEE, uniformed bust facing slightly right / SEESCHLACHT BEI SANTA MARIA AM 1 NOVEMBER 1914, naval battle, with one ship sinking another in foreground; third ship in background. Edge: Some light marks as made and discoloration, otherwise plain.


    Zetzmann 4047 note. Mint State. Attractive blackened surfaces, with great relief. Extremely large and rare format.


    German and British forces unexpectedly met off the coast of Chile near Coronel on 1 November 1914, with the forces of Spee easily overcoming those of the British, led by Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock.
