100970 | UNITED STATES & ITALY. Christopher Columbus bronze Medal. Issued 1830. Commemorating the famous explorer (42mm, 43.63 g, 12h). By N. Cerbara in Rome.

CHRISTOPHORVS COLOMBO, capped bust right / NOVA / ORBIS PARTE / VETERI ADIECTA / VTRIVSQVE COMMODIS / CONIVNCTIS in five lines; below, ship under sail right upon the seas; all within wreath. Edge: Plain.

Eglit 268; Rulau G7; Storer 75. Gem Mint State. Deep violet brown surfaces, with a radiating prooflike nature. Rare.

During the lead-up to the quadricentennial of Columbus's initial contact with the New World, numerous medals were designed and struck, both in the United States—in conjunction with the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago—and abroad, sometimes for this event of for similar others. This particularly interesting medal was issued much earlier in Rome, however, and has no connection to the series issued for the 400th anniversary. A forerunner piece and one of the initial to celebrate the exploits of the Italian explorer.
