    101144  |  GREAT BRITAIN. Agricultural silver award Medal. Issued 1881 by the Wirral & Birkenhead Agricultural Society to Schäffer & Budenberg (47mm, 37.23 g, 12h).

     

    WIRRAL / & / BIRKENHEAD / AGRICULTURAL / SOCIETY in five lines; around, five medallions containing farm animals: cow, horse, pig, rooster, and sheep; grains and fruits between, farm tools below / "Awarded / TO / Schoffer & Budenberg / for Patent / SOLID TUBE / PRESSURE GAUGE / 1881" engraved in seven lines in various scripts; decorative scroll work around; all within wreath. Edge: Plain.

     

    Gem Mint State. Deeply toned prooflike surfaces, with a great deal of colorful iridescence and some frosting to the obverse. Difficult to encounter this attractive. Includes original box of issue.

     

    Founded in Prussia by Bernhard Schäffer and Christian Friedrich Budenberg in 1850, their eponymous company became renowned for the manufacture of high quality pressure gauges, thermometers, valves, and manifolds. Arnold, the younger brother of Christian Friedrich, opened a sales office in Manchester, England, eventually growing the operation there as well. The company, now known simply as the Budenberg Gauge Company, is still in operation, located in Irlam in the greater Manchester area.
