The tale of Hansel and Gretel centers around a brother and sister who find themselves lost in the woods, eventually stumbling upon the unusual home of a rather eccentric, cannibalistic old woman. This home, comprised of gingerbread, sweets, and many other treats, was very alluring to the children whom the woman hoped to fatten and ultimately eat. In the end, Gretel foils the old woman's plot, killing her and allowing Gretel to escape to safety with her brother. The tale is one of the many compiled by the Brothers Grimm in their work published in 1812.
