One of the most famous and influential German authors and philosophers, Friedrich Schiller was born in the Duchy of Württemberg in 1759. Known for such works as William Tell, Mary Stuart, and Don Carlos, he struck up a friendship with fellow German author and philosopher, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, with whom he collaborated on Xenian—a collection of short satirical poems.
