Hailing from Genova in Italy, Columbus made a name for himself sailing in the service of Spain, discovering for them portions of the New World first in 1492. Though numerous medals commemorate his exploits during the quadricentennial celebration and the Columbian Expo in Chicago, it is this portrait medal from Durand's series which is the first to utilize a bust of the explorer over 70 years prior.
