    101461  |  GERMANY. Valkyrie on Horseback bronze Medal. Issued 1914 (40mm, 26.04 g, 12h). By B. H. Mayer's mint in Pforzheim.

Battle scene, with soldiers advancing right; above, Valkyrie, holding scythe, riding leaping horse right; all within decorative border / ZUR – ERG. / AN – DEN / WELTKRIEG / 1914, Iron Cross hanging from laurel and oak branch; all within decorative border. Edge: A few light marks, otherwise plain.

Cf. Zetzmann 2161 (for overall type); cf. Klose 11.8. Choice Mint State. Light brown surfaces, with a subtle matte nature.

This interesting and evocative design prominently features a figure wielding a scythe—typically held by a morbid representation of Death, but here instead held by a Valkyrie—adapted from Norse mythology by the Germans as a rallying cry for her soldiers.
