101528 | GREAT BRITAIN. Victoria as Prince Albert satirical engraved copper Penny (34mm, 18.77 g, 12h).

1854 London mint Victory penny, with engraving upon obverse: Military attire with decorated collar and tassels, with short, styled hair and moustache. Edge: Plain.

Cf. SCBC 3948 (for host coin); cf. KM 739 (same). Engraving: Extremely Fine. Deep brown surfaces. Great artistry and blending. Highly intriguing and interesting.

Satirizations of world leaders were extremely popular at this time given the variety of wars that would draw the ire of opposing soldiers and the amount of lonely idle time that they possessed. It is possible that this piece was done to poke a bit of fun at Victoria, presenting her as her husband, Prince Albert, who had quite possibly been deceased at the time of manufacture.
