The preeminent music theater in late czarist Russia, the Kirov Opera—now known as Mariinsky—has had numerous stints performing abroad, such as at the Royal Opera House at Covent Gardens. J. Walter Thompson was an advertising company that was acquired in 1987 by British media giant WPP, and was quite likely involved in the promotion of the event there that year as is evident on this medal.
