    101768  |  GERMANY & WESTERN EUROPE. Propaganda bronze Medal. Issued 1914. WWI series: the outbreak of the Great War (50mm, 50.85 g, 12h). By Mayer & Wilhelm in Stuttgart.

     

    Medieval soldier (representing Germany) standing facing, holding shield and sword; around, serpents representing her enemies: England, Belgium, France, Japan and Russia / Decorative plaque inscribed "FÜR DEUTSCHE / GIBT ES KEINE NOT, / SIE SCHLAGEN ALLE / SCHLANGEN TOT (for Germans, there is no need [for allies], for they will strike down all of the serpents) in four lines; garlanded oak and laurel branches in background. Edge: Plain.

     

    Cf. Zetzmann 2077 (for soldier side); Bernd Kaiser IV, 128.2 var. (54.5mm); Klose –. Choice Mint State. Brown-bronze surfaces, with a light matte nature. A fairly rare and interesting type featuring all of Germany's enemies as serpents.
