Considered to be the greatest German literary figure of the modern era, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spanned many areas of the arts and public life, being a poet, playwright, and novelist, as well as scientist, literary critic, and theater director, even serving as a statesman. It is no surprise that he was commemorated, and continues to be commemorated, on numerous medals such as this rare reissue from 1986 of an issue from 1831, the reverse of which was designed by Goethe himself.
