One of the leading Finnish artist-sculptors who laid a path for the likes of Kauko Räsänen, Wäinö Aaltonen became interested in art after being deaf as a child. Mostly self-taught as a sculptor, he was greatly influenced by a trip to Italy into cubism and more futuristic representations of art—aspects which would dominate his career.
