101947  |  FINLAND. Wäinö Aaltonen bronze Medal. Issued 1981. Commemorating the life of the famous sculptor (70mm, 294.93 g, 12h). By T. Sakki.

WÄINÖ AALTONEN / 1894–1966, bare head right / VUOSIMITALI–ÅRSMEDALJ 1981, side view and frontal view of a nude female midsection set in low relief inset; two small crescent moon medallions below. Edge: SPORRONG / 1892.

Gem Mint State. Light bronze surfaces, with incredible relief and some darker tone around the devices.

One of the leading Finnish artist-sculptors who laid a path for the likes of Kauko Räsänen, Wäinö Aaltonen became interested in art after being deaf as a child. Mostly self-taught as a sculptor, he was greatly influenced by a trip to Italy into cubism and more futuristic representations of art—aspects which would dominate his career.
