102296  |  UNITED STATES & GERMANY. Christopher Columbus gilt bronze Medal. Issued 1892 for the 400th anniversary of the Columbian discovery of America (40mm, 29.69 g, 12h). By H. Kissing.

Arrival scene, with Columbus raising sword and planting a banner reading COLUMBUS LANDUNG / IN AMERIKA in two lines; various sailors around, some kneeling before Columbus // ZUM 400 JÄHR. GEDENKTAGE DER ENTDECKUNG VON AMERIKA, view of the gobe, centered upon the western hemisphere. Edge: Plain.

Eglit –; Rulau –. Mint State. Brassy-yellow surfaces, with some enchanting brilliance remaining in the fields; some scattered deposits are noted however as well. A rare and interesting type that is unrecorded in Eglit and Rulau.

During the lead-up to the quadricentennial of Columbus's initial contact with the New World, numerous medals were designed and struck, both in the United States—in conjunction with the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago—and abroad—sometimes for this event or for similar others. In the case here, it was a German commemoration of the discovery.
