    AUGSBURG 1518 • LUTHER u CAJETAN, Cardinal Thomas Catejan (Gaetanus) seated right among his entourage; to right, head of Luther facing slightly left; in seven lines between, SI HANC / FIDEI / SENTEN- / TIAM / MUTAVERO / CHRISTUM / NEGAVERO (if I change this opinion of faith, I shall deny Christ) / MARTIN / LUTHER / 1483, three semicircles, with each containing an aspect of Luther's life: top, his confession; left, his father, Hans; right, his mother, Margarethe.     Brozatus 133. Choice Gem Mint State. Extremely vibrant and attractive iridescent toning, forming enticing concentric rings upon each side. For the lover of toned medals, it would be difficult to encounter other examples of this level of beauty.

     

    Celebrated each century on the anniversaries of the Protestant Reformation which he helped to bring about, Martin Luther was also celebrated in 1983 on account of the 500th anniversary of birth. One of his leading critics in the Catholic Church was Cardinal Thomas Catejan, who was a papal legate in Augsburg to then-Pope Leo X.
