Celebrated each century on the anniversaries of the Protestant Reformation which he helped to bring about, Martin Luther was also celebrated in 1983 on account of the 500th anniversary of birth. One of his leading critics in the Catholic Church was Cardinal Thomas Catejan, who was a papal legate in Augsburg to then-Pope Leo X.
