    102323  |  GERMANY & GREAT BRITAIN. Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf von Zeppelin silver Medal. Issued 1915 for R. Ball in Berlin. The use of the Zeppelin for the bombing of London during warfare (34mm, 17.17 g, 12h). By F. Eue.

     

    GRAF ZEPPELIN, bust facing slightly right // London Bridge under assault from two airships flying above; in two lines in exergue, LUFTANGRIFF / AUF LONDON. Edge: SILBER 800 VERL BALL, and a very minor bruise at 9h with respect to the obverse.

     

    Zetzmann 4089; Hans Kaiser 427; Joos a.328; Button 123. PCGS SP-63. Deep gunmetal gray toning, with some hints of iridescence and a great matte nature. Compare to the only other example of the type graded at PCGS, a SP-64, but with less toning and fields that are more prooflike than matte, that realized a total of $480 in Heritage 232217 (28 April 2022), lot 64527.

     

    Zeppelin was a German general and aircraft manufacturer, who later founded the airship company Luftschiffbau Zeppelin. During World War I, many of his airships were utilized in scouting missions and bombing campaigns, most notably in England, where their bombings killed over 500 citizens.
