Whiting 561; Brozatus 1220; Opitz 3144. PCGS SP-64. Deeply toned, with some enticing iridescence and luster; evidence of an undertype (a 1/12 taler of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand from Brunswick-Luneburg, KM 1000). A highly intriguing and enchanting example, and only the second observed in the PCGS census—the first being a SP-67 that realized a total of $700 in a Facebook auction (Virtual Coin Show) in June 2022. Also, a very rare instance in which a medal was produced using a recycled coin planchet.

 

An individual celebrated each century on the anniversaries of the Protestant Reformation which he helped to bring about, Martin Luther is the focus of this small medal issued on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Reformation in Dresden. The fairly spartan design features the All-Seeing Eye (Eye of Providence) on the obverse, with it also displaying evidence of being overstruck upon a 1/12 taler silver minor.
