    Victory seated left on bricks, resting hand upon shield and extending wreath over implements of science, commerce, and learning; in border, thirty-eight stars and four medallions containing representations of the four quarters of the globe // INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION / PHILADELPHIA, MDCCCLXXVI, AWARDED BY / UNITED STATES / CENTENNIAL / COMMISSION in four lines within wreath. Edge: Plain.

     

    Julian AM-10; Harkness Nat-300. Mint State. glossy brown surfaces; no heavy rim bruises or scuffs that commonly plague the type. A charming and impressive issue, with a mintage of 12,000 pieces, though a very small number survived this attractive and problem free.

     

    The Centennial International Exposition of 1876 had the distinction of being the first such expo to take place within the United States, all while being held during the nation's 100th anniversary of independence. Nearly 10 million visitors viewed such novel inventions as the typewriter, the sewing machine, and the telephone.
