Following the end of Brazil's empire in 1889, attempts were made the following year to establish agreed upon borders with neighboring republic Argentina. In commemoration of such treaties, this medal was created, with an allegorical version of Liberty that shares much in common with those of early American coinage as well as the Libertas Americana and related types from France.
