102865 | GREAT BRITAIN & SPAIN. Pablo Picasso cast bronze Medal. Issued 1981 for the centennial of the artist's birth (71mm x 83mm, 123.32 g, 3h). By J. McAdam at the Royal (Llantrisant) mint.
Bare head left // Female head facing slightly left in Picasso's cubist style, and likely emanating from his painting, Le Rêve. Edge: Plain.
The Medal 1 (1982), p. 3; Attwood 1 & pp. 10-11; Jones pp. 13 & 45. Essentially as Made. Olive-brown surfaces. A rare piece, 1 of just 35 cast, and the first in the expansive British Art Medals series. Compare to a similar example from the Silich collection, which realized a total of over $560.
Jane McAdam Freud was born in 1958, later studying and designing extensively in Italy—first with mosaics in Ravenna. Exhibiting extensively at FIDEM and creating multiple medals for the BAMS series, this entrant emanates from the first year of the series. She recently passed away in 2022.
One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881 and spent most of his artistic career in neighboring France. His earlier years were broken into many periods in which his styles and influences changed and evolved, with his later style incorporating some of the earlier aspects, such as surrealism and cubism.
