WAT BAET ER KAERS OF BRIL ALS DEN UYL NIET SIEN EN WIL (what's the use of either a candle or glasses if the eye cannot or will not see), owl perched left, head facing; candle to left, spectacles above // XIII CONCILIUM OPHTHALMOLOGICUM / SEPTEMBER / HOLLAND, stylized triangular coat-of-arms, with lion rampant with sword; 19-29 across field. Edge: Plain.
Galst & van Alfen V.4; Freeman 758; Jintes/Pol 210. Mint State details. Tan-brown surfaces, with a delightful matte nature, though some minor pitting is noted for completeness, and accounts for the details designation. An intriguing Art Deco rendition that draws inspiration for its obverse from a 1553 Calvin-Servet satirical medal.
