Details
102885 | EGYPT & BELGIUM. Queen Tiye bronze Medal. Issued circa 2005 (80mm, 197.92 g, 12h). By P. Huybrechts.
Bust left, wearing headdress; inspired by a bas-relief of the queen currently in the collection of the Art & History Museum of Brussels // Cartouche with hieroglyphics, though mostly covered in sand. Edge: Plain.
Cf. The Medal 45 (Autumn 2004), p. 93 (for a similar issue from 2003 after an Assyrian horseman). Essentially as Made. Bronze-yellow surfaces, with a charming matte nature. Very rare and true to the original bas-relief.
The inspiration for this medal emanates from a bas-relief purchased by Jean Capart in 1905, though, at that time, it was covered with graffiti and impossible to identify. Following a thorough cleaning, attribution was possible. The wife of Amenhotep III, Queen Tiye lived during the Eighteenth Dynasty, and was the mother of pharaoh Akhenaten and grandmother of pharaoh Tutankhamun. She is believed to have died in 1338 BCE, and her mummy, known as "The Elder Lady," was discovered in 1898.
