    102902  |  SWEDEN & FRANCE. Alfred Nobel bronze Medal. Issued mid-late 19th century (68mm, 140.02 g, 12h). By L. Holmgren at the Paris mint.

ALFRED NOBEL, bare head left; NAT/1833 - OB/1896 across lower field // Two laurel branches; around, five symbols representative of the prizes within the Nobel canon: PAIX (dove flying left, with laurel branch in beak; LITTERATURE (harp), CHIMIE (lab equipment), PHYSIQUE (representation of an atom), MEDECINE (serpent with basin). Edge: «cornucopia» BRONZE.

MdP IV, p. 943. Choice Mint State. Pale brown-bronze surfaces, with just a hint of rub upon the higher points of the portrait. A charming analog of Lindberg's famous renditions of Nobel done by his successor as chief engraver for the Swedish mint, Léo Holmgren.

Known for inventing dynamite and bequeathing his fortune in order to fund what would become the Nobel Prizes, Alfred Nobel was a prolific inventor who held over 350 patents. In 1864, he founded the Nitroglycerin Aktiebolaget (Nitroglycerin Corporation), the world's first manufacturer of nitroglycerin (which was vital in his patenting of dynamite a few years later).
