VICTORIA, QUEEN OF GREAT BRITAIN, crowned and mantled "gothic" style bust left; all within wreath composed of roses, shamrocks, and thistles // FOUNDED BY SIR THOMAS GRESHAM KNT: 1566, / OPENED IN STATE AND PROCLAIMED 'ROYAL EXCHANGE' / BY Q: ELIZABETH 1570, DESTROYED BY THE GREAT FIRE 1666 / FIRST STONE OF THE SECOND BUILDING LAID BY / KING CHARLES THE SECOND 1667 / WHICH WAS ALSO DESTROYED BY FIRE JANy 10, 1858, NEW ROYAL EXCHANGE LONDON, façade perspective view of the Exchange; in five lines in exergue, FIRST STONE LAID JAN 19 1842 BY / HRH PRINCE ALBERT / OPENED BY / HMGM VICTORIA / OCTr 28 1844. Edge: Some scattered staining, though otherwise plain.
BHM – (though cf. 2173 for rev.); Eimer –; cf. Taylor (though cf. 146k for rev.). Mint State. Extremely lustrous and prooflike, with argent frosting among the devices and mirroring in the fields. Very rare and seemingly an unpublished pairing of an obverse die that otherwise isn't observed until 1851, despite this issue emanating from 1844.
