Born in India in 1957 and studying sculpture at the University of Baroda, Dhruva Mistry later studied at the Royal College of Art in London on the British Council scholarship. His first medal for BAMS was "Maya medallion: the dark one" in 1988. With "Humanity" in 1994, he won a competition organized by the Royal Society of British Sculptors, with just three medals in silver serving as the output. BAMS felt that the design was worthy of greater attention, and a re-issue of 49 pieces in bronze was conducted in 1997 as part of their series. In The Medal 31, the writeup for this medal mentions that "...The Humanity medal offers hope of peace to a troubled world. Its subtle forms and juxtapositions suggest the oneness of things, and point to a fate that is shared regardless of the forces of time and space. Taken along with the Maya medallion, this medal is another reminder of what David Cohen, writing in The Independent about the 1996 exhibition of Mistry's works at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, described as the artist's array of styles and preoccupations, ranging from ... fulsome forms sculpted "in the round" to pictorial modelled reliefs.' He added: 'But all these works bear the unmistakable stamp of their author. There is, to borrow a slogan from the old India Congress Party, "Unity in Diversity"."
