103023 | GERMANY. Kitchener's Dream oval uniface cast bronze Medal. Issued 1915. "Kitchener's Traum"—on the task of raising a fighting force (83mm x 54mm, 51.61 g). By Hans Lindl in München.
KITCHENERS TRAUM (Kitchener's dream), man reclining right, with head on pillow; from his mouth emerge numerous soldiers each carrying a bayonet, and who line up at his side; 1914-15 in exergue // Rough incuse of obverse. Edge: Plain.
Klose 8.30; The Art of Devastation –; Frankenhuis 1434; cf. Jones, Dance of Death 14 (iron). Essentially as Cast. Tan-brown surfaces. A very rare and evocative type.

This type alludes to Lord Kitchener, who served as the British Secretary of State for War during the first half of World War I. He sought to expand the British army, and became famous for his "Lord Kitchener Wants You" posters. Here, Lindl presents a sleeping man (possibly meant to be Kitchener, though lacking his iconic mustache), dreaming of the forces that he was attempting to raise.
