103026  |  FRANCE & ITALY. "La Piave" cast bronze Jeton. Issued circa 1920 (49mm, 55.91 g, 12h). By Pierre Roche for Montagutelli Frères in Paris.

LA PIAVE, Lupa Romana seated facing, head right, with Romulus and Remus around; 1918 in exergue // Wings over olive wreath; in four lines around, LES / AILES / DE LA / VICTOIRE (the wings of victory). Edge: A few light pits as made, otherwise plain.

Vitry II, 13; Art of Devastation –; Frankenhuis –; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco 1950.62.16. Essentially as cast. Deep brown surfaces. A very rare type that is seldom seen and was part of a series referred to as jetons by Vitry.

    Ex: David B. Simpson Collection.

It is not entirely clear what is meant to be conveyed by this design, though the distinct Italian feel (with the allusion to the Lupa Romana and twins Romulus and Remus) may point to the Battle of the Piave River, which was a major Italian (allied) victory near the end of the war.
