103083 | GERMANY. Ludwig van Beethoven silver Medal. Issued 1927 for the 100th anniversary of the death of the composer (36mm, 18.83 g, 12h). By Karl Goetz at the München mint.
LVDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN, bust facing slightly left, wearing frock coat // 1827 + 26 MÄRZ + 1927, burning heart over partial crown and crossed laurel branches; MISSA • SOLЄMNIS (Solemn Mass, one of Beethoven's works) below. Edge: BAYER HAUPTMÜNZAMT SILBER 900 f.
Kienast 397; Niggl 142b. PCGS SP-63. Gunmetal gray surfaces, with a charming matte nature. The only such example of the type in the PCGS census. An appealing portrait issue that is a deviation from Goetz's heavily satirical ouvre.
Born in the Electorate of Cologne, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) displayed an immense musical aptitude from a young age, and studied under Joseph Haydn upon moving to Vienna. A crucial figure between the Classical and Romantic periods, he had a colossal output of material before being robbed of his hearing ability later in life.
