    103125  |  SWITZERLAND & GERMANY. Johann Georg Sulzer bronze Medal. Issued circa 1779 for the life of the professor of mathematics (43mm, 1h). By Abraham Abramson in Berlin.

     

    IOHANN GEORGE SULZER, draped bust left // PULCHRI SCIENTIA, owl, with head facing, standing slightly right on lyre set upon column inscribed NATUS / MDCCXIX in two lines.

     

    SM 524; Hoffmann 284. NGC MS-64 Brown. Rich glossy brown surfaces with intense luster. The reverse displays a slight rotated doubling of strike. A fairly scarce and highly impressive medal.

     

    Ex Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Meister & Sonntag in 2012 for €322 [$468 at the time] after buyer's fee).

    Sulzer was a Swiss-born professor of mathematics who later made contributions to the field of electricity, having stumbled across the "battery tongue test" in 1752. He also added to the humanities, publishing his General Theory of the Fine Arts between 1771 and 1774.
