103149 | NEW ZEALAND. "Woman" cast bronze Medal. Issued 1984 (61mm x 50mm, 141.72 g, 12h). By Marian Fountain.
Abstract nude female seated facing slightly left, with legs crossed and arms covering her chest // The same woman, seen from behind. Edge: Plain.
The Medal 5 (September 1984), p. 62. As Made. Glossy bronze surfaces, with deeper hues in the recesses. A very rare, highly sculptural work of medallic art by an artist known for such tactile pieces, and from an output of just 40 specimens.
A brief workup in the September 1984 issue of The Medal offers this about the artist and her work: "Marian Fountain, a New Zealander who is at present visiting England on an Elizabeth II Arts Council Major Travel Grant, studied medallic art under Professor Paul Beadle. Her work has a strong Pacific flavour and she describes her pieces as 'artifacts' from a lost civilisation. Medals like the 'Woman' illustrated here are available from the artist at 75 Fitzalan Street, London SE11." While sometimes mentioned as emanating from the British Art Medal Society series, this example lies outside of the official issues, though two other issues of Fountain have been a part of the lengthy series.
