    Mater et magistra, referring to the church as mother and teacher, was an encyclical written by John XXIII on the topic "Christianity and Social Progress." By in large, a more progressive approach to the changing times in the church and in the world, this encyclical touched upon the church's intervention at times in matters such as health care, education, and housing.
