103182 | UNITED STATES. Columbian Expo aluminum Medal/"So-Called Dollar." Issued 1893. By Blumenfield.
SOUVENIR OF THE OPENING OF THE WORLDS FAIR CHICACO [sic] / 1893, Landing scene: Columbus standing right upon land of the New World; three sailors and one clergyman around // SOUVENIR. BIRDSEYE VIEW OF THE WORLDS FAIR CHICACO [sic] / 1893, façade of administration building. Edge: Plain.
HK 166; Eglit 21; Starlust ST-eg-21; Rulau D14A. Gem Mint State. Exceedingly brilliant and prooflike, with alluring frosting upon the devices. One of the more attractive examples of the type that one will encounter.
During the lead-up to the quadricentennial of Columbus's initial contact with the New World, numerous medals were designed and struck, both in the United States—in conjunction with the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago—and abroad—sometimes for this event or for similar others. In the case of this souvenir medal, the view of the administration building is most definitely not a "bird's eye," and the host city of Chicago has a bit of a misspelling in two places, with the "G" not being properly engraved, thus resulting in a third "C."
