President of the United States during World War I, Woodrow Wilson initially sought neutrality in Europe's growing conflict. However, the hope for that began to fade, with evidence of the destruction within countries such as Belgium leaving Wilson little choice. By the time that the Lusitania was sunk, the die had essentially been cast, with America joining officially in the war on the side of the allies in 1917.
