The early years of World War II are reflected in the sentiments on this medal, with the conflict playing a large role in the beginnings of the papacy of Pius XII. Here, Christ is providing comfort to the soldiers and to those whom they were leaving behind. In this sense, those who were suffering physically and those who were suffering emotionally.
