    ISAACVS NEWTONVS, draped bust left // FELIX COGNOSERE CAVSAS, Science seated left, head right, leaning against a draped table to right, holding a tablet displaying a diagram of the planetary system; MDCCXXVI in exergue. Edge: Plain.

     

    MI 469/83; Eimer 504. Choice About Uncirculated. Alluring brown surfaces, with a pleasing matte nature and great brilliance remaining among the fields. Compare to the Galst specimen, a similar example with some issues, that realized a total of $720 (after the buyer's fee) in Classical Numismatic Group 118 (13 September 2021), lot 1422.

     

    In addition to his contributions to science, mathematics, and philosophy, Isaac Newton also held an important numismatic role as Master of the Mint, being appointed to that position in 1699. Holding this office for the remainder of his life, he effected many improvements in the coinage produced there.
