DR MARTIN LVTHER • JOHANN • D • BESTÄNDIGE, biretta-topped busts facing slightly right of Martin Luther, draped, and Johann the Steadfast, mantled; in two lines in exergue, APRIL–OKTOBER / 1530–1930 // ICH • WERDE • NICHT • STERBEN • SONDERN • LEBEN •, perspective view of Coburg Castle; below, garland reading VESTE • COBVRG; two coats-of-arms in exergue. Kienast 439; Whiting 897; Opitz 3932a; Schnell 376; Brozatus 1571 var. (36mm in silver). Gem Mint State. Even brown surfaces. An appealing dual-portrait issue that is a deviation from Goetz's heavily satirical ouvre.
An individual celebrated each century on the anniversaries of the Protestant Reformation, which he helped to bring about, along with the Augsburg Confession, Martin Luther is the focus of this engaging medal, featuring him as well as Johann the Steadfast, the Elector of Saxony, who provided refuge and protection to Luther in 1530 at Coburg Castle in Saxony.
