Part of a series of ancient coins struck in much larger, medallic form by the Paris mint in the mid 1960s to early 1970s, these examples serve as direct analogs to renaissance issues like Paduans and Cavinos, which themselves were fairly faithful imitations of ancient coinage. In this case of this medal, the coin celebrated is a fairly rare dupondius of the deified emperor Augustus, struck under his successor and stepson, Tiberius. Of note, the edifice featured upon the reverse of this issue is one of just four architectural renderings during the two-decade-plus reign of Tiberius—the emperor during the traditional chronology of Christ's crucifixion.
